And
Moses said: “This is the thing that the Lord commanded that you shall do, so
the glory of the Lord may appear to you.” Leviticus 9:6
Several
classical commentators note that our verse is apparently disconnected,
seemingly addressed to the entire congregation, as the previous verse notes
“and all of the congregation drew near and stood before the Lord,” yet there is
no specification of what the people are to do.
My
father suggested that the verse can be understood to mean: this is what the
Lord has commanded: “Do.” That is, Moses informed the congregation that it is
God’s will that they take action. Rather than simply awaiting God’s revelation,
Moses taught that it is through action and fulfillment of mitzvot that
Israel is privileged to experience Divine revelation.
