Much
of the Parashat Shofetim deals with war. As much as we may dislike war,
and as great and sincere as our desire for peace is, our desire is
insufficient. Peace cannot be unilateral, and therefore, Israel must be
prepared for war when our adversary is unwilling to accept peace.
My
father suggested that because so much of the parasha deals with war, it
opens with the command to appoint judges and executive officers, since war can
have such a vast impact on the entire fabric of a society.
